Help stop defunding of County Parks!

Views - Soapbox

As you are probably aware, our parks are in for another year of reduced funding in 2010.  To what extent has not yet been determined as the County Board is soon to finalize the County Budget for 2010.  Rest assured it will again be significant.  This has to stop.

Christine Sinicki and Jon Richards have co-authored Assembly Bill 504 which would enable a half percent sales tax increase for Parks and Culture in Milwaukee County.  Our Milwaukee County Parks would benefit greatly from this increase, but the bill would also include funding for other quality of life entities supported by Milwaukee County such as the Zoo, Marcus Performing Arts Center, the Museum, Villa Terrace, and the War Memorial Corporation.  The bill would also include a property tax reduction of about $38 million dollars for Milwaukee County property owners.

AB 504 has been scheduled for a hearing before the Assembly Ways and Means Committee on November 12th at 11am in room 300 northeast.  We need YOUR assistance.  If forty to fifty people attend the hearing it would send a strong message that we, from Milwaukee County, demand action on this matter.  If you could speak it would be even better.  Please consider coming along with our delegation of enlightened individuals to show your support for our beleaguered Park System.

Please send confirmation that you will attend by email to parkplace@parkpeoplemke.org or call me at 414-273-7275.  I will attempt to assist in transportation arrangements so we don't burn too much gas.  If enough people sign up we will rent vans to car pool to Mad Town.
