Give a Voice to Victims: August Community Impact Alert

    News - Notices

The County District Attorney's Community Prosecution Units and Safe & Sound Community Partners have issued a list of people who have been charged with a drug and/or gun crime by the County District Attorney's office: August Community Impact Alerts. Members of the communities affected by these crimes have the right to have input into the sentencing of these defendants, should they be found guilty. Your statement, even if anonymous, is important to the court and the DA.

The current month list includes 2 offenders with East Side addresses, 2 with Riverwest addresses, and 6 with Harambee addresses. (See list below.)

If you would like to provide a statement, please complete the Community Impact Statement form within 5 days of the relevant sentencing(s). (Call the number below or use CCAP to find that date.) Always remember to include the name and case number on your statement. Doing this enables a voice not otherwise heard for the indirect victims of drug and gun crimes. Individual community members can describe in detail how the offender or offense has personally affected them, their block, and the community as a whole. When submitted to the courts, it provides a broader picture of the harm caused by drug and gun crimes.

The entire community is the victim of drugs and gun violence. As victims, we have mandated rights of victims:

    • The right to be informed of the criminal justice process.
    • The right to know that a crime has occurred in your neighborhood.
    • The right to have anonymous input into sentencing of drug and gun crime defendants.
    • The right to community restitution.

Help fight the good fight! Keep dealers and violence off the streets of Milwaukee County! Keep our neighborhoods safe from drugs and guns by becoming involved and making your voice heard.

    District Attorney’s Community Prosecution Unit

The Community Prosecution Unit is a community-based crime fighting initiative, working out of neighborhood offices and collaborating with others (including residents, community groups and other government agencies) in the development of problem-solving initiatives. Community prosecution is founded on the idea that prosecutors have a responsibility not only to prosecute cases but to solve public safety problems, prevent crime and improve public confidence in the justice system. In many cases, community stakeholders actually help to set the crime-fighting agenda and participate in the solutions. Definitions of success are changing as well. Rather than simply tallying cases won or jail sentences imposed, community prosecutors are measuring the effect of their work on neighborhood quality of life, community attitudes and crime.

I just want to call attention to this, since it's the Riverwest bit in the Community Prosecution list this month. I'm curious to hear from anyone who has participated in this program, or anyone who wants to comment on this particular location.
