Arts in the Neighborhood
As part of its "Arts in the Neighborhood" series, the Harambee Great Neighborhood Initiative will unveil and dedicate a mural depicting
Master visual artist and muralist Reynaldo Hernandez painted the mural, assisted by three youth interns. Hernandez's most recognized work is his "Mural of Peace," the state's largest mural, which depicts an eagle and dove with a sunburst rainbow of flags, that greets motorists coming toward downtown
"We're thrilled to be able to involve young people in beautifying the Harambee Community while they learn valuable job skills, research the history of the area, and develop their artistic abilities," says Nannette Greene Smith, Project Manager for the Harambee Great Neighborhood Initiative, the neighborhood rebuilding effort that brought together multiple partner organizations for the mural project. "In addition, we think Riverworks Development Corporation, in developing the Beerline Recreational Trail along what was once a litter-strewn tract of land, is creating a real asset for this neighborhood."
