County still on the fence about Estabrook dam but looking for funding for repairs

News - News

The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted to override County Executive Scott Walker’s veto of an appropriation of $800,000 for repair of Estabrook Dam. Even with an additional $400,000 from the State in matching funds through a dam safety repair program, the Board may be hard pressed to resolve the failing dam's problems, and the Board has not yet decided to commit to repair the dam rather than remove it. The DNR will not give the County any funding for the dam until the County complies with existing repair orders. (Currently there is a repair or abandon order after years of accumulated repair orders that have not been complied with.) Estimates on repair costs from the County’s own study ranged from $7 to $12 Million, including operation and maintenance costs for the next 20 years.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper supports removal of the dam and has more information about the issue at: http://www.mkeriverkeeper.org/content/estabrook-dam-removal

Anatomy of an Avenue: North Ave. from the lake to Pewaukee

News - News

Anatomy of an Avenue, Barbara J. Miner’s photo essay on North Avenue, will premier on Friday Oct. 9 from 6-9 p.m. at the Inova/Kenilworth Gallery, 2155 N. Prospect Ave, Milwaukee.

Anatomy of an Avenue begins at the Milwaukee lakefront and ends 16 miles later as North Avenue dead-ends in the formerly rural, now ex-urban town of Pewaukee. “I chose North Avenue because it connects more neighborhoods, communities, cities and counties than any other major thoroughfare in the metropolitan area,” Miner says. “It is a microcosm of who we are as a community—both what unites us and what divides us.”
